Turkey High School Shooting: 11 Injured in Manisa, Suspect Detained
At least 11 people were injured after a gunman opened fire near a vocational high school in western Turkey on Tuesday, September 22, according to Turkish officials. Two of those injured were reported to be in serious condition.
The shooting happened around 8 a.m. local time outside the Inci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Turgutlu district of Manisa province, near the city of Izmir. Police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene after reports of gunfire.
Suspected shooter detained
The suspected shooter was arrested shortly after the attack, officials said.
Turkey’s Justice Minister Akin Gürlek said the suspect is a minor and that the suspect’s parents and grandfather were also detained as part of the investigation. Authorities have not established a motive. Investigators are also examining allegations of bullying and how the weapon came into the minor’s possession.
Initial reports differed on the number of people injured. Earlier accounts cited four, five or eight wounded, but a later statement from Justice Minister Gürlek put the number at 11 students, with two seriously injured.
Classes suspended
Turkey’s Education Ministry said classes at the school were suspended for the day following the shooting. Authorities launched an investigation, while medical teams treated those injured in the attack.
The shooting comes shortly after Turkey introduced additional school-security measures for the 2026–27 academic year following two school shootings in April.
Authorities have not announced a confirmed motive for Tuesday’s shooting.
