A 34-year-old woman was stabbed to death while on a break from work in downtown Detroit, and police have taken a man into custody in connection with the fatal attack.
The stabbing happened around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, September 20, in an alley near Woodward Avenue and East Congress Street, according to Detroit police.
The victim was identified as Jaquoya Wixx. Police said she was on a break from her job at a nearby Chipotle when a man approached her in the alley and stabbed her multiple times.
Wixx managed to run to a nearby business for help but collapsed outside. Medics transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said the suspect fled the scene after the stabbing. A downtown worker reportedly chased after him, while investigators used surveillance cameras and other technology to track him.
The man was later arrested near Woodward Avenue and State Street, according to police. Investigators said he did not have the knife when he was taken into custody, although police believe the weapon has been recovered and is being processed as evidence.
Police have not released the suspect’s name. Investigators were also working to determine what led to the attack.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield described the stabbing as an apparently unprovoked attack and said there appeared to have been very little interaction between Wixx and the suspect before she was stabbed.
Wixx was a mother whose 15-year-old daughter attends school in Detroit, according to Sheffield.
The fatal stabbing occurred in a busy part of downtown Detroit near Woodward Avenue, where police remained at the scene Sunday collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information about the suspect and possible motive could be released as detectives continue their work.
