UMass Dartmouth Football Player Marvins Antoine Killed in Providence Stabbing
A freshman football player at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth was fatally stabbed in Providence, Rhode Island, early Saturday, while a teammate was also injured in the attack.
Police identified the victim as 18-year-old Marvins Antoine, who was stabbed in the chest and later died at a hospital, according to Providence police.
Antoine had been at Mezzo Lounge in Providence with members of the UMass Dartmouth football team after their Friday night game.
Police said an altercation involving a woman and some people in line at the nightclub later moved into a nearby parking lot at a Wendy’s. Antoine was subsequently stabbed.
His teammate, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, was also stabbed. He suffered injuries to his head, neck and arm and is expected to survive.
Police identified 19-year-old Chukuwnonso Uzome-Eze, a UMass Dartmouth student, as the suspect. He is facing a murder charge.
Investigators said Uzome-Eze left the area in a vehicle that was identified through license plate readers. He was later taken into custody by UMass Dartmouth police.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said Antoine and Macean had no prior relationship with the suspect.
Uzome-Eze is being held in Massachusetts while Providence police work to bring him back to Rhode Island for arraignment. Authorities said the investigation remains active and additional charges could be filed.
A vigil was held Saturday evening on the UMass Dartmouth campus in memory of Antoine. Students and others gathered to honor the freshman football player, chanting his jersey number, 26, and releasing balloons.
The investigation into the stabbing remains ongoing.
